Itchy, Watery Eyes??  You may have seasonal ocular allergies.

First, came the biggest December deluge in 121 years, followed by a heat wave in January and Santa Ana winds gusting across San Diego thru February.  With all these abrupt and unlikely differences in weather patterns this winter, the upcoming allergy season is going to be in full force.  This Spring is likely going to host the highest pollen count in years and San Diego’s suburban residents are going to feel the irritation of dry, itchy, watery eyes as well as sniffling, sneezing and runny noses.  Weather reports and experts say this spring has already produced extremely high levels of yellow pollen blanketing many areas of the country and as temperatures increase these symptoms will only become worse.

Allergies are an abnormal immune system reaction to things that are typically harmless to most people. When you are allergic to something, your immune system mistakenly believes that a certain substance is harmful to your body. Some common substances that cause allergic reactions are foods, dust, plant pollen, animals and medicines. In an attempt to protect the body, the immune system produces an immune response to these substances. This response then causes certain cells in the body to release chemicals into the bloodstream, one of which is a histamine. The histamine then acts on the eyes, nose, throat, lungs or skin and causes the symptoms of an allergic reaction. Future exposure to that same substance will trigger an allergic reaction over and over again.

Millions of people every year suffer from ocular allergies that go undiagnosed and untreated. Although more annoying than anything, these allergies can cause damage to the eyes due to scratching and rubbing. There are several different medications specifically used to treat ocular allergies. If you are experiencing watering, itching, redness, lid swelling or a sensation that something is in your eyes or would like more information on ocular allergies please make an appointment with your local optometrists Drs. Cooper and Breen.
