![]() The season for weed control never ends! Weed control is an ongoing process that affects most everyone. Weeds that grow in the spring are different from weeds that grow in the summer. Summer weeds are different from fall weeds, which are different from winter weeds. New and different weeds are growing all year long, which cause yearlong problems. The ideal weed control is to control these ever-growing weeds prior the emergence with a pre-emergent herbicide. This type of weed control is referred to as pre-emergent weed control. These pre-emergent weed controls can be used on established lawns, flowerbeds and for general weed control. Pre-emergent herbicides can be specific for grassy weeds, broadleaf weeds or general all around weed control. An application of pre-emergent herbicide prior to weed germination and growth will provide control of the weed growth. Grangetto’s has a wide selection of pre-emergent herbicides. Partial listings of available products are: Amaze, Crabgrass Preventor2, Ground Clear, Killer, Snapshot, Ronstar, Treflan, Weed Impede, Weed Stopper and XL. Visit your local Grangetto’s Store to select and purchase one of the pre-emergent herbicide products to fit your needs and provide you with a weed free environment. Vegetables are similar to weeds. Similar, not as plants growing out of place but similar as to various species growing in the different seasons throughout the year. During the cooler months of the year, various vegetables can be planted which will yield springtime harvest. Some of these vegetables are referred to as Cole Crops along with various other vegetables. Cole Crops consist of Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Kohlrabi, Radishes and Turnips to list a few. Additional vegetables that can be planted during the cooler season are Beets, Daikon, Lettuce, Onions, Peas and Swiss Chard again listing a few. Adding a soil amendment will assist the growth and development of all vegetables planted. Amend produced by Kellogg’s is a product produced for the vegetable garden. Use Amend at the rate of one bag per 12 to 15 square feet. Incorporate (mix) the Amend to a depth of 4 to 6 inches. This Amend application will provide additional tilth to the soil along with healthier plants which will produce a more bountiful garden. One last thought: It is not too late to apply a dormant spray on fruit and nut trees as long as the flower and leaf buds have not opened. Dormant sprays are applied to assist with disease (fungus) and insect control later during the growing season. Products such as Polysul Summer & Dormant Spray and Kop-R-Spray by Lilly Miller and Liqui-Cop by Monterey can by applied for disease control. Oil sprays which provide dormant insect control are Ortho Volck Oil Spray, Green Light Neem Concentrate (OMRI) and Green Light Horticultural Oil Spray.
