Aeonium urbicum: plant of the month

Aeonium urbicum: "Salad Sensations"

As we get to the end of the hot part of summer, doesn’t a nice, crisp, cool “salad” sound good? The plant species, Aeonium urbicum, has a group of shapes called the “Salad Series.” These are succulents, that despite their lush, juicy leaves, arranged in tantalizing whorls of crisp green, or a tint of red, are actually very tough plants in the landscape. They’re fantastic in “dry shade,” drought tolerant, but they love their water in the cool season when the rains come! From the large “platters” of “Salad Bowl” and “Red Salad Bowl,” to the mosaiced tiles of “Side Salad” and “Green Garnish,” this is the way to add a refreshing delight, in low mounds, to your gardening experience. We have one of the varieties growing in the landscape right here at the Escondido facility of Grangetto’s! (P.S....hold the dressing- you can’t really eat ‘em.)
