Annual Charity Garden Tour & Ecke Plant Sale on Saturday, April 24th
WHAT: This popular tour will include 5 residential garden stops in North County San Diego, and includes exclusive admission to Ecke Ranch to purchase an incredible selection of blooming Pack Trial Spring Plants at below-market prices. Shop rows and rows of begonias, geraniums, SunPatiens, Osteospermum, and many other plants not yet available to the public. The tour and plant sale will take place rain or shine. Water Smart Pipeline Helps Gardeners Save Water
Winter-time callers learn that this is the best time of year to plant
RANCHO SAN DIEGO, CA—The Water Smart Pipeline at the Water Conservation Garden offers free advice to California gardeners, both novice and experienced. The Pipeline is answered by Nan Sterman, author of the California Gardener’s Guide, Volume II, and host of the television gardening program, “A Growing Passion.” This help line is an educational service that helps Californians create beautiful, drought-tolerant home gardens that thrive in our arid, Mediterranean climate. And, there is plenty to talk about, especially in winter.
“Winter is a great time for residents to plant all the low water plants that we’ll enjoy the rest of the year,” said Nan Sterman. “Most people think about planting in spring. That’s fine for the rest of the country but for San Diego, fall and winter are prime planting seasons.”
Pipeline hours are Tuesdays: 8:30 am to12:00 pm and Thursdays: 1:00pm to 4:30pm,. The phone number is 1 866-962-7021. Voicemails and emails can be left 24-hours a day. All calls are returned during Pipeline business hours. The Pipeline email address is pipeline@thegarden.org.
Initial funding for the Water Smart Pipeline came from the Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust. Additional funds have been provided by the Hans and Margaret Doe Charitable Trust. Directions to the Garden: The Water Conservation Garden is located at 12122 Cuyamaca College Drive West in El Cajon, where Jamacha Rd. (not Jamacha Blvd.) and Hwy 94 meet. From Hwy 15 or Hwy 805, merge onto Hwy 94 East to Cuyamaca College Drive West. From Hwy 8 take the 2nd St. off ramp in El Cajon (which turns into Jamacha Rd.)and then turn onto Cuyamaca College Drive West. FALLBROOK GARDEN CLUB
Presents Its Sixth Annual Garden Tour
Saturday May 22nd, 2010
9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.
Seven fabulous gardens are included in the tour, with something very special for everyone to enjoy in each garden. Among the special features are:
- A Mediterranean Botanical Garden that was designed by Tom Piergrossi, Host of the Emmy Winning Show, “Down to earth”.
- An extensive fully matured succulent garden and two newly planted Succulent and Cacti water-wise gardens.
- A new grape vineyard set in beautiful, colorful surroundings.
- A Victorian house and garden with lovely walkways, a giant redwood tree, and a classic railroad car.
- A lovely Rose garden displaying over a hundred species of brilliant colors and unexpected flora.
Interesting Vintage Automobiles will be on display at selected homes on this tour as well as at the Fallbrook Historical Society. In addition, a number of Fallbrook’s talented Artisans will be at work in the gardens throughout the tour.
Tickets/Maps will be sold only on the day of the event from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. at the Fallbrook Historical Society located at 260 Rockycrest Road, Fallbrook. Plants and miscellaneous garden items will also be available for sale at that time.
Ticket prices are $20.00 per person or 2 tickets for $35.00.
Proceeds will benefit the Fallbrook Garden Club Scholarship Fund and other community projects.

The San Diego Chapter of the California Rare Fruit Growers, Inc. (CRFG) announced today that free Introductory classes will be held in San Diego, the fourth Wednesday of each month. The class will be held at 6:00 PM at Balboa Park, Casa del Prado Room 104.
These free classes are a unique opportunity to learn about growing unusual and rare fruit in San Diego. San Diegans can grow many fruit varieties including jujube, capulin cherry, raisin tree, pitahaya, longan, jaboticaba, tropical guava, passionfruit, wax jambu, excellent bananas and ice cream bean among others.
According to José M. Gallego, Chairman of the California Rare Fruit Growers, San Diego Chapter, “We want to share with anyone who has an interest in growing unusual fruit and unusual varieties of more common fruit. We also are bringing in some of the foremost experts on different fruit to share their experience with new gardeners.”
