Jack Schultz Speaking Schedule
Jack Shultz is a master rosarian and award winning horticulture and arrangement exhibitor in Southern California. Jack tends an organic garden of 500+ roses and he cares for the rose gardens of several clients. He is in high demand as a speaker about organic rose care.

Rancho San Diego, CA—The Water Conservation Garden invites the public to enjoy its 2009 winter events. Classes offered help residents save water and money by focusing on water smart landscaping techniques and plants. Classes are taught by experts and topics include lawn removal, water smart landscape design, backyard composting, irrigation design and gardening for children. We are offering special stimulus pricing for many of our classes! Get two registrations for the price of one (same household only, please) on all classes marked with a *.

Holiday in the Garden

Visit the Garden as it glows with holiday lights, inviting you and your family to stroll the grounds and join in the season’s merry making. Adults will enjoy shopping for holiday gifts, while children make crafts, decorate cookies, and get their faces painted. Music, warm holiday punch, and seasonal tamales will make a delicious and memorable evening. $3 Admission, ages 12 and under free. Kids’ activities $1 each.

Join Horticulturist, David Yetz for an informative and delicious exploration of fruit that can be grown in a water-conserving landscape. Simply Succulent Wreath-Making

Learn to make your own living succulent wreath. Elizabeth Ramos shows you how to make a uniquely beautiful wreath that will last several years. The wreaths can be hung outside to accent a patio or garden, used as a table centerpiece with candles, or decorated and placed on your front door for the holidays. Succulent wreaths are an unusual treasure you will enjoy making for yourself and others. Price includes all materials and instruction. $45 Members, $55 Non-Members. Tamale Making 101

Explore the Latin American tradition of making delicious tamales for the holidays! You will learn a brief history of the tamale, then dive right into preparing masa, corn husks, and fillings to create two types of tamales, one with and one without meat. You will also learn to make a delicious MexicanChristmas punch. Each student will leave class with one dozen tamales and recipes. Ingredients in this class include meat broths and a variety of herbs and spices. Class size is limited, so please sign up early. $65.

Home Compost Workshop

Learn the basics of composting, how to use worms to compost, and how to save water in the landscape using compost and mulch. Workshop will be held at the Garden’s Compost Demonstration Site. Master Composter Whitney Duenez will answer your questions and teach you the basics of turning yard and kitchen waste in to garden gold! $10 Members $15 Non-Members. Register early as the class is limited to 15 participants.

San Diego Horticultural Society
The San Diego Horticultural Society meets on the second Monday of every month from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Surfside Race Place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Jimmy Durante Blvd in Del Mar. Mingle with rose enthusiasts, nursery owners, palm fanatics and plant breeders. We’re a diverse and neighborly group!

The San Diego Chapter of the California Rare Fruit Growers, Inc. (CRFG) announced today that free Introductory classes will be held in San Diego, the fourth Wednesday of each month. The class will be held at 6:00 PM at Balboa Park, Casa del Prado Room 104.
These free classes are a unique opportunity to learn about growing unusual and rare fruit in San Diego. San Diegans can grow many fruit varieties including jujube, capulin cherry, raisin tree, pitahaya, longan, jaboticaba, tropical guava, passionfruit, wax jambu, excellent bananas and ice cream bean among others.
According to José M. Gallego, Chairman of the California Rare Fruit Growers, San Diego Chapter, “We want to share with anyone who has an interest in growing unusual fruit and unusual varieties of more common fruit. We also are bringing in some of the foremost experts on different fruit to share their experience with new gardeners.”
