The Water Conservation Garden Celebrates Summer with New Hours

Enjoy the water smart beauty of the Garden in the cool of the evening

Every Wednesday evening in July and August, the Garden will be open until 7:00 P.M. Come and enjoy 5 acres of water smart beauty; stroll the grounds as you learn ways to save money and water in your home landscape. Evenings in the Garden delight the senses with fragrant pathways, hummingbirds sipping nectar, and lizards darting throughout the Garden enjoying the evening temperatures. Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy dinner in the Garden.

The Water Conservation Garden’s education programs continue throughout the summer months of July and August. Classes for adults and Summer Discovery Day Camp are part of the summer menu. Visit the Garden’s website for details and registration. www.thegarden.org

The Garden’s summer hours went into effect June 1st and continue until the end of August. The Garden will be closed on Monday and open late on Wednesday evenings.

Monday-The Garden is closed to the public

Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday hours: 9:00 am to 4:00 pm

Wednesday: 9:00 am-7:00 pm

On Monday, July 13, 2009, the San Diego Horticultural Society welcomes horticulturist Mary Irish, whose very timely a program titled “Plants for Drier Gardens" will inspire us to try new plants as we face increasing water restrictions. Irish will provide a thoughtful review of woody plants and perennials that thrive on minimal watering, even in the summer, and provide ample beauty, structure and color in the garden.  Copies of her books will be available for sale. The evening starts at 6:00 p.m. in the Surfside Race Place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Jimmy Durante Blvd. in Del Mar. Parking is free and everyone is welcome. Admission is free for members and $5 for non-members. The presentation will be followed by an opportunity drawing featuring plants you’ll want to add to your garden. After a short break, there will be the popular Plant Forum, where plant experts will discuss plants and answer questions about plants brought in by the audience.

California Rare Fruit Growers

The San Diego Chapter of the California Rare Fruit Growers, Inc. (CRFG) announced today that free Introductory classes will be held in San Diego, the fourth Wednesday of each month. The class will be held at 6:00 PM at Balboa Park, Casa del Prado Room 104.

These free classes are a unique opportunity to learn about growing unusual and rare fruit in San Diego. San Diegans can grow many fruit varieties including jujube, capulin cherry, raisin tree, pitahaya, longan, jaboticaba, tropical guava, passionfruit, wax jambu, excellent bananas and ice cream bean among others.

According to José M. Gallego, Chairman of the California Rare Fruit Growers, San Diego Chapter, “We want to share with anyone who has an interest in growing unusual fruit and unusual varieties of more common fruit. We also are bringing in some of the foremost experts on different fruit to share their experience with new gardeners.”
