Nan Sterman: "Lessons from Chelsea:  International Ideas for Sustainable Gardens"
January 14, 2008

On January 14, 2008, start the new year off right with Nan Sterman, who will talk about the Chelsea gardens that embody the principles of sustainability.  Nan will discuss lessons learned and ways to adapt these elements into home gardens here in San Diego. She will also have a book signing of her new book  “California Gardener’s Guide: Volume II”. The evening starts at 6:00 p.m. in the Surfside Race Place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Jimmy Durante Blvd. in Del Mar.

Sometimes, you need to travel half way around the world to solve the problems in your own backyard.  Such was the case with last year's Chelsea Flower Show, “the world’s largest flower show” in Chelsea, England. In the May 2007 event, international designers created beautiful and innovative gardens that address many of the problems we face here in Southern California: limited water supplies, ongoing drought, invasive plants, global warming and the desire for home-grown tastes.

Nan Sterman is a nationally recognized author, speaker and host of KPBS-TV’s A Growing Passion. She has been gardening in the same corner lot in Encinitas for the past 21 years. There she implemented practices that were much later to become popular as “urban garden sustainability”. Careful plant selection, water zoning, design for utility and maintainability, along with smart watering, all play a role. Join us as Nan draws on present-day English examples to address our Southern California gardening challenges.

After a short break, there will be the popular Plant Forum where plant experts will discuss plants and answer questions about plants brought in by the audience. This will be followed by an opportunity drawing featuring plants you’ll want to add to your garden.

Admission and parking are both free, and everyone is welcome. For more information, call (760) 295-7089 or visit www.sdhortsoc.org.
