Grangetto's Gardening Tips for October

• Pay attention to snails and slugs showing up in your garden. The cool moist weather brings them in. They usually attack new plants. Try Monterey Sluggo. It’s safe for pets and breaks down into fertilizer.

• Now is a good time to plant or repair lawns. Use Grangetto’s Tall or Dwarf Fescue Seed then top with Kellogg Topper to keep seed bed moist.

• For over-seeding your lawn, use Pennington Annual Rye Grass Seed for quick germination and top with Kellogg Topper. 50 pounds of Annual Rye Grass seed covers 5,000 square feet.

• Fertilize your fruit trees and ornamentals with Best Triple 15.

• Feed your lawn. Use Best Nitra King, a 22-3-9 cool season fertilizer with Iron to keep it green.

• Fall is the time to prevent weeds. Use Green Light Crabgrass Preventer, Green Light Amaze or try DeWitt Weed Barrier Fabric.

• It’s time to plant wild flowers. Grangetto’s carries a wide variety of wild flower seed such as, California Poppies, Lupines, and California Blue Bells.

• Prune dead, weak or diseased branches from trees and shrubs. Use the Felco Pruner #2; it cuts up to 1” diameter.

• It is time to reduce your watering. Adjust irrigation timers.

• With the rain, comes the need for erosion control. Some useful materials are straw wattles, straw mats, silt fence, and jute netting.
